A Kendal man’s dream of opening his own café and cocktail bar after experimenting with recipes during Covid, is now celebrating 12 months in business.
Mark Weighman, inspired by years of travelling to Spain and falling in love with its laidback lifestyle, set out to create a bar that reflected the authenticity and social buzz of his second home.
He said: “During lockdown, I really got into making cocktails and experimenting with flavours, including using different syrups.
“When things opened up again, I realised Kendal didn’t have a place like this — a cocktail bar that made drinks on the spot using fresh ingredients and one that’s at the heart of the community. As soon as I walked into 5 Wainwright’s Yard, I just knew it was the spot.”
Mark said the bar was known for locally sourced produce — beer from Lakes Brew Co, coffee from Farrers, and cakes by Ginger Bakers — and for its warm welcome.
He added: “The best part is meeting new people and trying out new ideas. We’re not just a bar — we’re a space for people to relax, laugh and enjoy something a bit different.”
Mark plans to launch ticketed wine and cheese nights, introduce a small food menu, and expand private cocktail experiences for birthdays and special occasions.
“We’re just getting started,” he added. “There’s still so much we want to do, but we’re so thankful to everyone who’s supported us so far.”
An anniversary party will be held next Friday, August 22.
