Emergency services were called out after two paddleboarders were spotted in trouble off the West Cumbrian coast.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said the two youths were seen off St Bees yesterday, Monday August 18.
One paddleboarder was struggling to get ashore and drifting further out, and a person was reported as in the water trying to help.
The Coastguard team said: “With two of our team at the beach themselves when the call was received, along with St Bees RNLI crew, it was a very swift attendance.
“Thankfully both youths were found to be on the board, and were now managing to make it ashore.
“They were met by Coastguard rescue officers, who gave safety advice and explained the importance of wearing a suitable personal floatation device and use of the boards ankle leash.”
The rescue team issued the following safety advice:
- Take a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch of hand held VHF radio.
- Buddy up – go with someone else if you can
- Or tell someone where you’re going/when you’ll be back
- Check weather and tides. If in doubt, don’t go out
- Always wear a personal flotation device and leash
