Tight race for bowls title

In the West Cumbria Mixed Triples League it looks like a tight finish to the race for the title.

Although Maryport still head the table Workington A are hot on their heels.

At the time of writing Maryport, with just one game to play, are 11 points ahead of their closest rivals, Workington A.

But the Low Green team has three games to play.

Results from 19 August: Harris Park A 9, Vulcan  Park 0; Cleator Moor 4, Harris Park B 5; Croft 9, Seascale 0; Whitehaven A 4, Maryport 5; Workington A 9, Whitehaven B 0; Egremont 7, Seaton 2.

League standings (Games played and points)  Maryport 12-77, Workington A 10-66, Whitehaven A 11-63, Workington B 10-61, Wigton 10-56, Croft 12-53, Cleator Moor 11-48, Harris Park A 12-48, Vulcan Park 11-43, Seaton 12-43, Egremont 12-42, Harris Park B 12-41, Seascale 11-40, Whitehaven B 12-30.

West Cumbria Fours League

Although the league title was settled a while ago the race is still on for second and third place.

Cleator Moor have played all of their games and have 71 points; Whitehaven A also have 71 points but have a game to play (against Whitehaven B) thus needing just one point to finish as runners-up in the league.

Fitz Park have one game to play (at home against Maryport) and are on 66 points and, therefore, have a realistic chance of finishing third and a theoretical chance of finishing second.

Last Friday Whitehaven A came a cropper against Whitehaven B when they lost 4-3, though in fairness they were, it is understood, far from full strength – even so, a great result for the B team.

Results from 22 August: Seaton 7 Vulcan Park 0; Cleator Moor 2 Fitz Park 5; Whitehaven A 3 Whitehaven B 4; Workington A 7 Workington B 0.

League standings (Games played and points): Workington A 16-95.5, Whitehaven A 15-71, Cleator Moor 16-71, Fitz Park 15-66, Maryport 15-54, Seaton 16-44, Workington B 16-34, Vulcan Park 16-26, Whitehaven B 16-27.5.
