The youngest club champion in Maryport Golf Club’s history has been crowned.

James Niemand, 15, took the title last weekend at the West Cumbrian club.

Finalists from various competitions throughout the year go head-to-head in their respective finals.

The club championship final which starts with a 36-hole competition which was played earlier on in the year.

The top 16 from that competition qualify for the club championship in a knockout format competition to be played off scratch.

Finalists this year were Lloyd Vannet and Niemand and Niemand won 5 & 3.

The club said: “James is our youngest ever club champion ever and will have his name marked in history with the club. We couldn’t be prouder.

“James has came on in leaps and bounds over the year with also making his way into the junior county squad and representing the county in various competitions.

“We would also a special mention for the winners of the Senhouse Cup Final, a foursomes format played throughout the year in pairs with each player in the pair of 2 taking alternate shots throughout the match.”

This year’s winners were Liam Holm, 15, and Bill Clark, 91.

The club added: “This is also another record broken for the club and probably the UK! Again, we couldn’t be prouder.”
