A swan has died after it was injured in a suspected dog attack in West Cumbria.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened at around 7am yesterday, Thursday September 4.
They said officers were called with a report that a swan was attacked by a dog – or multiple dogs – in Maryport.
The swan – the father of four cygnets – was rescued after it was spotted in distress in the River Ellen.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was called after the alarm was raised.
It was feared someone may attempt to rescue the swan, who appeared to injured and was drifting into Maryport Harbour from the River Ellen, and put themselves at risk.
The Coastguard operations room contacted the RSPCA and volunteers from Ani-Mel Haven animal rescue recovered the swan to take it for veterinary assessment and treatment.
Maryport Rescue was also requested to assist with public safety, but due to the swan having drifted close to shore, they were able to stand down as they launched.

A post on social media this afternoon from Ani-Mel said that the swan’s injuries were too severe and he had to be euthanised.
