Time to book flu and Covid-19 vaccinations

People across north Cumbria can now book flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as the NHS urges those at most at risk to protect themselves from serious illness this winter.

Those eligible can book online at participating GP practices or community pharmacies, on the NHS website, through the NHS App, or by calling 119 for free – for appointments starting October 1.

Invitations will be sent by letter, text or email, reminding people it’s time to come forward for their vaccinations, however people do not need to wait for an invitation to book an appointment.

Flu vaccines are also recommended for, all school-aged children from reception to year 11. These will be delivered by school immunisation teams at the start of the new school term.

Pregnant women will be able to get their flu vaccine at their GP surgery or during a routine antenatal appointment.

Those eligible include:

  • Adults aged 65 and over (flu)
  • Children aged 2-3 years (flu nasal spray)
  • Adults aged 75 and over (COVID-19 and flu)
  • People living in older adult care homes (COVID-19 and flu)
  • People aged 18 months to 64 years with long-term health conditions (flu)
  • People aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed (COVID-19)
  • Close contacts of people with weakened immune systems (flu)
  • Frontline health and social care staff (flu)

Community vaccination clinics may also be available, in some areas, which can be booked online.

Dr Catherine Monaghan, respiratory consultant and medical director, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, said: “Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be lifesaving and are the best protection we have against these viruses.

“COVID-19 and flu season often peaks during December and January so vaccinating from October ensures the highest level of protection, during the colder months, when people tend to spend more time indoors and viruses spread more easily.

“Many people don’t realise they’re at higher risk so if you’re not sure whether you’re eligible, please speak to your GP, midwife, or visit the NHS website.

“Getting protected ahead of winter is one of the most effective ways we can all help keep ourselves, and others, safe and well. It only takes a few minutes to book an appointment, and I’d strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to come forward for a vaccination as soon as they can.”
