Free creative workshops will be held in West Cumbria this month.

Art Gyms, starting on September 17, will be held in Cleator Moor and are for youngsters aged 10-plus.

Organised by Handpicked Productions and funded by Arts Council England, Art Gyms give young people the chance to experiment, express themselves, and push creative boundaries — whether working solo or alongside others.

Led by professional artist Janice Murray, participants will explore a range of techniques including printmaking, textiles, and new approaches to drawing and painting.

There will also be opportunities to shape future projects with Handpicked Productions, giving participants a voice in the work and festivals the organisation creates.

Anne Timpson, director at Handpicked Productions, said: “Art Gyms are about giving young people the chance to try new things, meet like-minded creatives, and build confidence in a fun, relaxed setting.

“This is an exciting time to join, as participants will also have the opportunity to help shape our future work. It’s a fantastic way to gain real experience in the creative industries.”

Workshops start on Wednesday September 17 and will run weekly from 6pm to 8pm (unless otherwise stated) at The Phoenix Youth Project, Cleator Moor Youth & Community Centre, Birks Road, Cleator Moor, CA25 5HP.

Sessions are free with a recommended donation of £2, and booking is essential via handpickedproductions.org

Art Gyms are run independently of the Phoenix Youth Project but are open to all – participants do not need to be youth club members.
