An inquest has been opened into the death of a motorcyclist following a South Cumbria crash.
Alexander Birnie died following the incident on the A683 between Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale, in the Middleton area, on August 25.
Mr Birnie, 21, lived and had been born in Burnley. He was a former Padiham FC under-18s goalkeeper who had gone on to join the first team squad for a time, the football club said.
Cockermouth Coroners’ Court heard this morning that Mr Birnie had been single at the time of his death, and was a company director by occupation.
Formally opening an inquest, assistant Cumbria coronerMargaret Taylor outlined some brief circumstances she had been given about the collision.
She said: “Mr Birnie was driving his motorbike when he was involved in a crash into the nearside grass verge. There does not appear to have been any other party involved in this incident.”
The cause of Mr Birnie’s death was given as multiple injuries, including head injuries.
Concluding that a full inquest would be needed, the coroner said evidence had been requested from Mr Birnie’s family, from police and the North West Ambulance Service. Provided all evidence was available, the inquest would resume on January 20 2026, said Ms Taylor as she adjourned today’s short hearing.
