Pumpkin carving, spooky storytelling, apple tasting and bat walks, there’s a whole host of family-friendly events on offer from the National Trust.

Looking for ways to make the most of the season and half-term holiday?

For free and low-cost activities here’s a round-up of what’s on:

Allan Bank

Allan Bank’s pumpkin carving returns for Halloween.

At Allan Bank in Grasmere, children and grown-ups alike can unleash their spooky side with hands-on pumpkin carving sessions running from October 25 to October 30.

With all tools and materials provided, it’s a mess-friendly, imagination-fuelled activity held indoors, perfect for unpredictable weather.

Booking is recommended, and pumpkins are £3.50 each plus standard admission.

You can book your tickets here

Wray Castle

Head across to Wray where you’ll also find pumpkin carving from October 26 to October 30.

Tools and pumpkins are provided plus a tasty treat. It’s £7 per pumpkin and booking is recommended.

Halloween thrills in the wild

For those who prefer their Halloween thrills in the wild, guided bat walks are taking place throughout October at Aira Force, Stickle Ghyll in Langdale, and the Borrowdale Rainforest.

These twilight adventures offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of nocturnal wildlife.

Spooky yarns

Meanwhile, local storyteller Jessie McMeekin will be spinning spooky yarns at Wordsworth House & Gardens in Cockermouth during half-term and at Allan Bank on November 27.

Designed for children aged five to 10, these interactive sessions bring tales to life with sound effects and actions.

At Wray there is free daily guided ghost walk during half term.

Beatrix Potter treats

For fans of Beatrix Potter’s tales there’s an enchanting new experience on October 18, Stories in Starlight invites you to discover Hill Top at night on a special story-led walk through the house and orchard with storyteller Jessie McMeekin.

In the day explore The Tale of Two Bad Mice and the beautifully restored dolls’ house at Hill Top.

Booking is essential for all visits to the house.

Get crafty

Families can also get crafty with seasonal activities at venues including Allan Bank, Wordsworth House & Gardens and the recently opened Tabitha Twitchet Bookshop in Hawkshead.

At Tabitha Twitchet’s, children can craft puppets, masks and costumes inspired by nature, in creative sessions led by The Knotted Project.

Search the events section on the National Trust website for all details.

Taste of the harvest

Autumn wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the harvest.

At Acorn Bank near Penrith, apple tasting weekends and harvest sales run through October, while stocks last.

It’s a delicious way to explore local produce and celebrate the season.

Autumn walks

Cumbria’s landscapes are at their most magical in autumn. Here are some of the best walks to enjoy the crunch of leaves underfoot and stunning seasonal views:

Aira Force waterfall walk is a classic Lakeland walk with dramatic waterfalls, ancient woodland, and plenty of leaf-crunching paths. Look out for red squirrels!

Broomhill Point Viewpoint is a lesser-known gem with sweeping views across the landscape, making it perfect for a quiet moment to take in the colours of the season.

Champion Tree Trail, Ambleside, here you can discover some of the tallest and oldest trees in the Lake District on this trail through Skelghyll Woods. A great mix of nature, history, and autumn colour.

Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge is a scenic riverside walk with stunning views of the Langdale Pikes, peaceful woodland, and a cosy café stop at the end.

Sizergh Holeslack Accessible Trail is a 1.9km circular walk starting at the house at winding through ancient woodland, traditional Westmorland orchards, and historic farm buildings. There’s a café on site, plus the woodland wild play trail to explore.

Tarn Hows Loop is one of the most picturesque spots in the Lakes, this circular walk offers reflections of autumn trees in the water and panoramic views of the fells and there’s a Joey’s Café in the car park.

Plan your next adventure

Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities or cosy indoor fun, there’s something for every family to enjoy this autumn in Cumbria.

Plan your next adventure with the National Trust.
