
Two men have been charged after a Sellafield striker was seriously injured during a protest.
Cumbria police are investigating the collision, which happened outside the Calder Gate entrance to Sellafield, yesterday Wednesday September 18.
Officers worked through the night following the incident and later charged the men in the early hours of this morning.
Craig Fawcett, 50, of Seascale was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Albert Darren Fawcett, 52, of Gosforth was charged with dangerous driving.
The Fawcett brothers have appeared in court this morning.
Police were first called out at 8.55am yesterday following a collision involving a vehicle and two pedestrians.
One of the pedestrians, a man aged 55, was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven with serious injuries before being transferred to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary.
He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
The other, a man aged 39, also attended hospital with minor injuries and has now been discharged.
Two other people arrested – two males, aged 19 and 16 – were bailed with conditions.
Cumbria police said it was aware of some tensions in the community and is asking everybody to act responsibly.
People may see an increased police presence as officers continue to offer reassurance to the community.
Officers have also been liaising with the organisers of the industrial action taking place at the site to offer reassurance.
Police are continuing to ask people not to share any footage circulating online or speculate about the circumstances so as not to impact criminal justice proceedings.
The strike action at Sellafield is set to continue this week despite the incident.
