The streets of Kendal came alive this weekend as over 1,000 participants and many spectators gathered to celebrate the town’s beloved torchlight procession, writes Chris Jones.
The event, held yesterday, Saturday, September 27, saw a vibrant parade of community groups in costume, large puppets, marching bands, and townsfolk of all ages winding through the town.
Despite persistent heavy rain, it did not deter the enthusiasm of those taking part.
Launched in 1970, the Kendal Torchlight Procession has become a staple of the town’s cultural calendar. It’s not without its challenges, as many voluntary events need to raise money to make it happen.
This year’s theme — Seasons — celebrated the event’s evolution and the creativity of the local community.
Many local participants joined the procession, including dance and theatre groups, marching bands, schools, and individuals, many of whom had spent weeks preparing for the event.
Volunteers played a key role in marshalling the event and ensuring it ran smoothly.
Local businesses reported a boost in trade, with some cafés and pubs extending their hours to accommodate the influx of visitors.
