Whitehaven have added to their squad by re-signing second-row forward Rio McQuistan.
The South Cumbrian had earned a reputation as a utility player at his Community club Millom before signing for Haven a year ago.
He had been a mainstay in the Woollybacks side for several seasons and had represented England Community Lions Under-19s in their European competition campaign in 2022.
In his last season at Millom he scored four tries in 10 appearances in NCL Division Two on his return from playing Grade Rugby in Australia.
After an impressive first season in the semi-pro ranks he has now agreed a two-year deal with Whitehaven, keeping him at The Ortus Rec until the end of 2027.
McQuistan had an impressive debut season in Haven colours making 16 appearances which may have been more if it hadn’t been for a knee injury sustained in the home victory over Rochdale.
The second rower scored one try and picked up several man of the match awards throughout the campaign.
Whitehaven head coach Anthony Murray said he was looking forward to seeing his potential grow.
Murray said: “It’s fantastic to have Rio committing his future to the club. He is another local lad who really impressed with his work ethic, physicality, and attitude throughout last season.
“He’s only just scratching the surface of what he’s capable of, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow — he’s got a big future ahead of him.”
