Former Workington rider Luke Harrison was crowned British Under-19 Champion after a dramatic finish to a hugely entertaining event at Northside.

The Scunthorpe and King’s Lynn youngster had been runner-up last season, but this time he went one better in a meeting which was decided in a three-way run-off.

Harrison was joined on 12 points from five rides by his Young Stars team-mates Jody Scott and Cooper Rushen, and their shot at the title came after heartbreak for home rider Vinnie Foord.

The Comets man looked set to move on to 13 points and win the meeting when he led Heat 19 only to suffer a seized engine as the top prize slipped away.

It means the three riders on 12 points went into a run-off for the crown, which Harrison took ahead of Scott and 15-year-old Rushen.

Harrison said: “It’s good to finally do it, after last year when I came second after it was rained-off, and coming so close in the Under-21s and not quite making it in the final.

“To get the Under-19s this year was a big thing for me.”

Foord would have been a popular winner on his own Workington track after endearing himself to Comets fans over the season.

At the end of season presentation he was awarded the Battler of the Year trophy.

Harrison rode for the Comets in 2023 when they reformed in the National Development League.
