National Adoption Week 2025: Could you welcome a child into your home?

Adoption Cumbria is the newly refreshed regional adoption agency for Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness councils.

Operating across the whole of Cumbria, and beyond, it is now welcoming people who are interested in adopting a child, or brothers and sisters together.

National Adoption Week runs from October 20 to October 26 and Adoption Cumbria is calling on people across the county to consider whether they could open their hearts — and their homes — to a child who needs one.

This year’s National Adoption Week theme, Welcome Home, is inspired by new research for the national #YouCanAdopt campaign, which revealed that one of the biggest barriers stopping people from coming forward is the belief that their family, home or lifestyle might not be the right fit for adoption.

Many worry that their circumstances or past will be judged.

But the truth is simple: a child doesn’t need perfection — they just need a welcome home, and to belong in a family forever.

Across Cumbria, children of all ages are waiting for the safety, warmth and love that only a family can provide.

Whether you’re single, renting, part of a same-sex couple, or already have children, what matters most is that you can offer stability, care, and commitment.

Adoption Cumbria wants to challenge outdated myths about who can adopt and remind people that homes come in all shapes and sizes — and that’s perfectly okay.

Find out more at events in Cumbria

To mark the week, Adoption Cumbria is hosting a special online information event on Tuesday October 28 at 6pm, open to anyone who’s curious about adoption.

You can book your free place at www.trybooking.com/uk/events/59944/sessions.

It’s a relaxed, no-pressure opportunity to meet the team, hear real stories from adopters, and ask the questions that matter to you.

For those who prefer a personal conversation, private one-to-one sessions are also available throughout the week at:

  • Monday October 20 – Ulverston
  • Tuesday October 21 – Penrith
  • Wednesday October 22 – Workington
  • Thursday October 23 – Carlisle

You can book a slot with an experienced and knowledgeable member of the team at https://www.trybooking.com/uk/events/landing/92084

Adoption Cumbria has been rated nationally as the most friendly regional adoption service, for people wanting to enquire, so feel free to have a conversation, without pressure to take it further if the time isn’t right.

Adoption Cumbria provides extensive training and lifelong support for adopters — from preparation courses and peer networks to therapeutic guidance and post-adoption advice. No one is ever expected to go through the process alone.
