A new section of Carlisle’s cycling network will be officially opened this week.
Route 38: The Cargo Link, part of the National Cycle Network Route 7, runs from Cargo to Carlisle’s northern bypass.
It was funded by Active Travel England, Cumberland Council, Cycle Carlisle and Kingmoor Parish Council, the route provides a vital connection between local communities, schools, shops, and employment areas, making it easier for people to choose cycling, walking, or wheeling for everyday journeys.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “We’re delighted to see the Cargo Cycleway completed and open for the community to enjoy.
“This new route makes everyday journeys safer and more accessible. It’s another step towards creating a cleaner, greener Carlisle where active travel is an easy and enjoyable choice for everyone.”
The official launch will take place on Wednesday, October 29, at 2pm. People are invited to attend and enjoy refreshments.
Rebike Community Cycle Hub will host a free pop-up bike repair workshop at Cargo playground, local residents and businesses are encouraged to drop by for free bike checks, minor repairs, and cycling advice.
