Carlisle band Hardwicke Circus have been taking Ukraine by storm on a tour marked by both powerful performances and unexpected challenges, writes Chris Jones.
From Kyiv to Cherkasy and beyond, the band has faced everything from vehicle breakdowns to sudden power cuts, yet their music and spirit have never faltered.
Lead singer Jonny Foster said: “Touring Ukraine has been one of the most moving experiences of my life.
“Every city, every audience, every handshake reminds us why we play music — it’s about connection, hope, and resilience.
“Even when the unexpected happens, like a power outage or van trouble, the energy from the crowd transforms any setback into a moment we’ll never forget.”
The Cherkasy gig nearly went acoustic due to a sudden power cut. Foster said: “We thought the night might be lost, thankfully the power came back on just before we went on stage – the audience lit up the venue with their phones and carried the songs with their voices.

“That collective energy was more powerful than any amplifier — it was unforgettable.”
Bassist Ben Wilde, who grew up in Caldbeck, said: “I never imagined playing in places like Kyiv or Cherkasy would feel so personal.
“Meeting local people, visiting military hospitals, and connecting with communities really hits home. It’s humbling to see their strength and resilience, and it makes me reflect on where I come from and the things that truly matter.”

Beyond the performances, Hardwicke Circus has made a point to engage deeply with local communities.
Visits to schools, memorials, and hospitals have added layers of meaning to the tour. Social media has captured these moments, showing fans worldwide the raw behind-the-scenes experiences — laughter, exhaustion, and emotional highs.
As the tour continues, Hardwicke Circus is proving that music is more than entertainment.

It’s a bridge, a source of comfort, and a reminder of human strength.
For Jonny, Ben and the rest of the band, each performance in Ukraine reinforces the power of music to unite, uplift, and inspire, leaving both the audience and the performers with memories that will last a lifetime.
