Over 130 artisan traders, street food and music are at Holker Hall this week at its annual winter market.
What began almost 20 years ago as a modest Christmas fair in the South Cumbrian hall’s courtyard has grown into the largest seasonal market in the North West outside Manchester.
Organisers said this year’s event promises to be the biggest yet. It runs until tomorrow, Sunday November 2.
More than a dozen street food traders will tempt visitors with everything from wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers to vegetarian and vegan dishes, sweet treats and warming winter drinks. The Courtyard Café will also be open all day.
Artists from Cumbria Music Collective will perform music during the market, spanning folk, blues, acoustic pop and festive classics and the Bread and Butter Theatre Company will make appearances throughout the weekend.
Admission to the winter market includes free entry to Holker Hall and Gardens — giving visitors the chance to step inside one of the region’s most fascinating historic homes.
Access to the hall is by first-come-first-served guided tours, with departures every 30 minutes from one hour after opening.
Inside, visitors can admire original paintings by Van Dyck and Joshua Reynolds, along with the largest private library in South Cumbria, housing more than 3,500 books, some dating as far back as the 16th century.
Each room reveals layers of history and the personal touches of the Cavendish family, whose stewardship of Holker dates back to 1756.
When is Holker Winter Market?
Holker Winter Market at Holker Hall, near Cartmel, opens at noon on Friday October 31 and ends at 7pm.
On Saturday, November 1 and Sunday November 2, it is open from 10am to 5pm.

Tickets are £7.50 in advance, £8.50 on the day and under-12s can attend for free.

Parking is free, with ample space in the event fields and a dedicated Blue Badge area close to the gates.
