
Workington Reds have appointed former Carlisle United coach Billy Barr as their new manager.
Barr is meeting the players for the first time tonight at Penrith, along with his assistant Lee Andrews, who re-joins the club after both playing and managing the Reds.
Preston-based Barr, 56, has coaching experience at various levels and has also held managerial roles.
His last job was as a coach at Carlisle United, when he was appointed by Paul Simpson in February 2024.
He was, of course, a ormer Carlisle player turning out in 91 League games for the Blues between 1997-2000.
He also played for Halifax (196) and Crewe (85) and later had a brief spell with Workington and Gretna before retiring.
He had a brief spell as caretaker manager with Carlisle before working at Preston North End for four years as head coach.
He had spells coaching at Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham and ended his stay in Wales as caretaker manager.
He then joined Blackburn Roversm coaching the Under-23’s before linking up with Gary Boqwyer with Salford City as assistant manager.
The pair then worked together in Scotland with Dundee, securing promotion before they left.
His last port of call was coaching at Carlisle under Paul Simpson.
Workington chairman Phil Norman said: “It’s taken a little time but we are delighted to have appointed Billy and look forward to moving forward with him in charge.
“He is bringing Lee Andrews with him while Brian Dawson and Billy Redden go back to their previous roles with RITC and goalkeeping coach respectively.
“We are grateful for their contributions over the last few weeks and it was great that they were able to hand over a winning team.
“The 1-0 win at Stocksbridge on Saturday wasn’t just a good result, it was a good performance.”
