A derelict Lake District hotel is being transformed into a new luxury venue.
Grey Walls, in Windermere is being turned into a 17 suite aparthotel by Cradel Haus.
Permission for the revamp was granted in January this year and it is hoped work will be completed by October 2026.
The business was deemed unviable in 2020 because of challenges in the hospitality industry such as staffing and running costs.
The building has stood empty for nearly five years with many attempts to regenerate the site halted on viability grounds.
Now work is underway by Cradel Haus, owned by North West-based husband-and-wife duo Craig and Del Parsons.
The couple said: “We’re excited to be restoring a much-loved local landmark that many residents have said had become an eyesore, and turning it into a beautiful place for holidaymakers to enjoy when visiting our beloved Windermere.”
Grey Walls has a long history in the town and had expansive gardens that once stretched into what is now Elleray Gardens.
Locals still recall its heyday as a social hub and one of Windermere’s most recognisable buildings.
Cradel Haus is keen to honour that heritage as part of the restoration and is inviting anyone with old photographs, memories or stories of Grey Walls to get in touch via [email protected]
Contributions will help build a small archive to celebrate the site’s past as it enters a new chapter.
Local family-run building firm Oakden has been appointed to carry out the works.
Giles Oakden said: “As a family business rooted in the Lakes, it means a lot to us to see investment staying local and supporting local trades.
“Projects like Grey Walls are exactly what we love to do, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.
“You can feel the history in the building, and it’s exciting to think of it welcoming guests again rather than standing empty.”

Interior designer Wild Kind Interiors and photorealistic render specialists The UnBuilt have produced CGI images that bring Cradel Haus’ vision for Grey Walls to life.
Cradel Haus also own Fair Rigg, four holiday apartments on the edge of Bowness.
