Windscale progressed to the quarter finals of the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup with a 2-1 win over Whitehaven Miners.
The game, originally scheduled to be at Miners, was transferred to the Falcon Complex, after the pitch was deemed unplayable.
It might have meant a postponement but both teams were keen to play the fixture.
It only took the Atoms three minutes to first test the Miners’ backline.
Rob Davidson picked the ball up inside the final third and slotted a ball in behind for Travis Fyfe, who’s shot from a tight angle beat the keeper but also the far post.
The Atoms would nudge ahead on 17 minutes, after a delightful through ball from Lewis Selkirk split the right side of the defence open, allowing Jack Wordsworth to power on through.
The resulting shot was saved by Miners’ custodian Andrew Monaghan but was turned home on the rebound by Fyfe.
Selkirk then grabbed his own assist, as on 29 minutes, his well-placed corner was met by Aiden Kegg, who powerfully headed the ball into the back of the net, doubling the Atoms’ lead.
Miners wouldn’t stay down for long, as they won a free kick outside the Windscale box, and whilst the wall was being set up, a quick shot from Bradley O’Pray was taken, and landed in the far corner, much to the dismay of the Atoms wall and keeper, who were not set at the time.
The Atoms retained possession to the end of the half and at the start of the second half the first chance went to Windscale’s Joe Atkinson, but his header was turned wide.
Wordsworth had another chance to extend the lead, as he got onto the end of a Callum Bell cross, but his shot would end up off target.
Selkirk tested Monaghan, cutting inside on his left, but his shot trickled into the arms of the Miners keeper.
Introductions of Ross Leeson and Ben Mahaffy from the bench kept the Atoms pushing forward.
Fyfe would have the ball in the back of the net for what looked to be a brace but was pulled back for offside.
These missed chances would come to almost haunt the Atoms as strikes from Jamie Thursby and Jay Connor for the Miners threatened to put Miners level.
They weren’t able to fashion an equaliser despite late pressure.
Ultimately, the Atoms wereable to see out the game and make the last eight.
Already through are holders Carlisle City, Workington Reds and Cleator Moor Celtic, who were awarded their tie by Wetheriggs United.
Also making progress were Kirkoswald who were 3-1 winners at Fellside.
Goals from Liam Robinson, Reece Simpson and Niall Renwick put them into the last eight.
The tasty tie between the top two teams in the Cumberland County League – Maryport Athletic v Unisun Athletic – was postponed because of an unfit pitch.
Still to play their second round games are Workington Juniors v Penrith (November 18) and Greystoke v Carlisle United (November 19) at Penrith FC.
