Bright lights spotted off the West Cumbrian coast prompted a concerned angler to call 999.
The angler saw the lights off Drigg and was concerned they were marine distress flares yesterday, November 19.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and Millom Coastguard Rescue Team were called out to investigate.
A request was made for St Bees RNLI to launch and assist with a search.
Meanwhile a broadcast was transmitted for any information from vessel in the vicinity.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Teams conducted a shoreline search between Seascale and Bootle, with the lifeboat search this area afloat.

“During the search, several extremely bright meteors were sighted by the search teams.
“With nothing found during the searches or from enquiries, the search was suspended pending any further information and at this time is assumed to be a false alarm with good intent.
“It is believed the sightings were in relation to the Leonid meteor shower which occurs every year in November, with peak activity mid-month.”
