Luke Hunter, Penrith’s top scorer and the leading marksman in the Northern League, has signed for AFC Fylde.
The 24-year-old had attracted attention after a blistering start to the season and was initially asked to spend a week with the National North side.
He impressed enough to be invited back and has now signed for the club ahead of today’s game with Buxton.
Hunter has scored 20 goals already this season in the Northern League Division One and becomes Craig Mahon’s latest addition to his attacking ranks.
Hunter is a former teammate of Coasters defender Liam Brockbank, with the pair featuring together at Carlisle United.
Millom-based Brockbank later played at Workington, Lancaster and Altrincham before joining the Coasters.
Hunter spent time in the academy at Carlisle from Under 9s to Under 16s before returning to Penrith where he spent his junior days.
Standing at 6ft 2in, Hunter provides a strong, physical and different type of attacking threat as the Coasters enter a busy winter period.
Hunter said: “I’m buzzing to get the deal over the line and join AFC Fylde.
“I’ve been down to watch the lads and playing in a stadium like this is something you can’t complain about.
“I’ve never had a start to a season like I have this campaign, but I’m enjoying my football at the minute and hopefully I can come here, continue that form, and help the lads get some important points.”
AFC Fylde head coach Craig Mahon added: “We’re delighted to welcome Luke to AFC Fylde.
“He offers a different type of threat at the top end of the pitch, and his skill set is something which will be valuable to us in the coming weeks.
“He’s been scoring goals for fun at Penrith, and we’re hoping he continues that form and confidence during his time with us.”
The Fylde club has put on record its sincere thanks to Penrith AFC for their co-operation during this process, and wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season.
In a message on social media, the Penrith club said: “It’s with mixed emotions that we announce our top scorer, Luke Hunter, will be leaving Penrith AFC to pursue a full-time career in football with AFC Fylde.
“Everyone at the club is absolutely delighted for Luke. His hard work, talent, and commitment have earned him this opportunity, and we couldn’t be prouder to see him take this next step in his career.
“He has been a fantastic player for us, a brilliant team-mate, and a credit to the club both on and off the pitch.
“Of course, while we’re thrilled for him, we’re also disappointed for ourselves. Losing a player of Luke’s quality is never easy, and he’ll be greatly missed around the club.
“But he leaves with our full support, our gratitude, and our very best wishes for the future.”
