A Barrow health centre will undergo a £7 million upgrade.
The Alfred Barrow Health Centre on Duke Street will become a neighbourhood health centre – a health and care ‘one stop shop’ that will bring a combination of GPs, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other services together under one roof.
The aim is to prevent complications, improve access to services, and avoid the frustration of being passed around the system.
The development is due to start in April next year.
The upgrade to the Alfred Barrow Health Centre is part of ongoing work by Barrow and Furness MP Michelle Scrogham, local health leaders, and Team Barrow, to deliver a comprehensive plan for local health service improvements.
Mrs Scrogham said: “I am pleased that we have been able to secure this investment for the redevelopment of the Alfred Barrow Health Centre, which will be an important part of the changes that we need to see.”
It is part of the Government’s NHS Neighbourhood Rebuild programme.
Mrs Scrogham hosted a recent meeting which pressed for improvements in the local health care estate.
The meeting was attended by Andrew Bennett, of NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Aaron Cummins, of Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB, Scott McLean, of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, and Peter Anstiss from Team Barrow.
