Workington Reds boss Billy Barr welcomed a new face to training this week – but he won’t be signing immediately.
The new arrival is a central midfield player, who can also operate across the back four, but it will be a fortnight before any signing is announced.
Barr is looking to strengthen his squad for a determined push for safety over the second half of the season.
Reds are bottom after 18 games in what will be a 40-match season following the resignation of Widnes.
That means the bottom three will be relegated and at the moment Reds are at the foot of the table with 14 points from their 18 matches – five of those points obtained in Barr’s four matches in charge.
All matches are crucial but coming up are ones against two sides in the bottom five – away to Leek on Saturday (played 16, points 20) and a week later home to Bamber Bridge (16, 19).
Barr will be putting his squad through their paces tonight after a pleasing workout on Tuesday in which he said the players were very good and worked hard.
“I was very pleased with their efforts and performance on Saturday and that is the sort of standard they have to set in every game going forward.
“I want us to be a front foot side and I do believe there is still more to come from them as regards top fitness,” he said.
Jack Dickinson, goalscorer Dav Symington and Josh Galloway all returned to the side against Warrington and the only injured absentee was goalkeeper Alex Mitchell.
