West Cumbrian youth group continues to thrive

A West Cumbrian youth group will continue to thrive, thanks to extra funding.

Salterbeck Youth Group, based at the estate’s Oval Centre in Workington, was launched last summer.

It followed a consultation by social landlord Riverside Housing, national charity StreetGames and Active Cumbria.

People said there was a need for accessible, low-cost youth activities that combined sport, physical activity, and youth work.

Riverside Foundation provided StreetGames’ with over £19,000 in funding to help bring the idea to life.

National charity StreetGames delivered the programme in partnership with local organisation North Allerdale Development Trust.

The group has grown to nearly 100 registered young people, offering weekly sessions that include sports, dance, rugby, yoga and archery.

The trust has secured £11,550 in additional funding – including £8,000 from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and £3,550 from Cumbria Community Foundation – and will now lead the programme independently for the next year, with spaces available for new participants to sign up.

Sessions take place on Mondays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
