Mitchells’ first sale of 2026 will be a specialist auction of militaria.

It takes place at the firm’s Cockermouth saleroom on Thursday January 8 from 10am.

Highlights among the lots include a World War two Luftwaffe presentation box made by WMF, inscribed 20 July 1944, with an estimate of £600 to £800 and a Welsh Guards bear skin with plume and chin strap in its box which is expected to sell for £550 to £650.

Also for sale are a 19th century brass cannon on a railed slide, barrel length 16”, valued at £250 to £350 and a Campaign tantalus formerly belonging to General Bradshaw, estimated at £150 to £250.

A Spitfire altimeter should make £80 to £120 and a World War One British Army belt with a quantity of badges and buttons attached has an estimate of £50 to £80.

The sale also includes a large number of swords, daggers and bayonets as well as medals, badges, binoculars, trench art, guns and ammo boxes.

A good collection of books on the Napoleonic Wars and World War One and World War Two are also up for auction.

Lots are on view in the saleroom on Wednesday January 7 from 10am to 7pm and throughout the sale.

A fully illustrated catalogue can also be viewed online at the-saleroom.com/Mitchells or easyliveauction.com/Mitchells where buyers can register to bid live during the sale or leave automatic bids in advance.

Those unable to attend the sale can arrange to bid by telephone or leave commission bids in advance by contacting the saleroom.
