A Lake District mountain rescue team was called out on New Year’s Eve after flashing lights were seen on the slopes of a fell.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was called to Yewdale Fells after someone called police to report the lights at around 7.30pm.

The team said: “A small party of team members was deployed with good torches.

“Following directions from the original caller, they were able to locate the source of the lights.

“A couple, who were safe and well, were celebrating the new year and camping out for the night.

“This was an incident based on good intent and concern for others.”

It was the team’s 70th call out of 2025 and took two hours.
