A trial date has been set by a judge in the case of a man accused of attempting to murder two neighbours at an address in Penrith late last year.
Samuel Hughes, a 46-year-old former Royal Marines Commando, faces a total of six charges.
These arise out of an incident at a house in Brentfield Way, Penrith, on November 27 2025.
Cumbria police said in the aftermath that officers had been called at 4.16am on that date to a report that two people inside the address had suffered injuries.
Two male occupants of the property were said by the spokesman to have been injured. Both were treated at hospital and discharged later that day.
Two criminal charges allege that Hughes attempted to murder a man and woman during the incident, while a third charge alleges that Hughes wounded the second man with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.
Two further charges allege aggravated burglary: that Hughes entered a house on Brentfield Way, inflicted grievous bodily harm on the two men, and at the time had with him a weapon of offence, namely a knife.
A sixth charge alleges the illegal possession, by Hughes, of a knife in public at Brentfield Way.
Hughes made his first appearance at Carlisle Crown Court this morning. During a 15-minute hearing he spoke from the dock — wearing a dark grey jumper — to confirm his name and date of birth.
A defence barrister asked that Hughes not enter any pleas to the six allegations at this stage of the legal proceedings.
A psychiatrist, said the barrister, had been asked to prepare a report after meeting with Hughes.
A number of issues were due to be addressed during this assessment, before consideration was given to pleas being entered on a future date.
Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the case for that psychiatric report to be prepared. In the meantime the judge set a provisional date for a trial in front of a jury.
This is due to start on June 8 2026 and, it is estimated, will last around five days.
Hughes, of Brentfield Way, Penrith, is next due to appear at the crown court on February 13, when progress in the case will be assessed.
In the meantime, Hughes remains remanded in custody.
