An expanding West Cumbrian football club is likely to be given the use of a playing field for 25 years.
Mirehouse AFC in Whitehaven approached Cumberland Council in 2024 about taking on the Cumberland Council-owned Greenbank playing field.
The club is based on Newlands Avenue and supports 10 youth teams, a girls team and an adult team.
It said its existing site was well used and it wanted more space for training and matches.
Greenbank playing field has been vacant for a number of years and mainly used by dog walkers. The grass is cut around twice a year by the authority’s parks and open spaces team.
Members of Cumberland Council’s executive committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday January 6, and have been recommended to approve entering into a lease with Mirehouse AFC.
The terms of the lease are due to be discussed in a part of the meeting which is not open to the public.
However, a report to councillors says: “It is proposed to lease the Greenbank Playing Field to Mirehouse AFC for a term of 25 years for one peppercorn per annum.
“The market rental value is considered to be £1,500 per annum and, as such, the proposed terms would represent a disposal at an undervalue.”
