A controlling Cumbrian man who belittled and repeatedly assaulted his partner, leaving her bruised, will be sentenced by a crown court judge.
Rohan Skelton, 39, engaged the behaviour towards the woman over more than three years — between January 1 2022 and May 3 last year — Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard today.
Skelton was regularly intimidating and belittled his partner during their relationship. Skelton was also verbally and physically abusive.
Prosecutor George Shelley told the court: “Matters came to light on a night out in May last year. The woman confided in a friend and showed a large bruise on her arm.
“She disclosed this defendant had become, over the period, physically abusive towards her.”
Police were informed and the woman was formally interviewed.
She described a number of specific incidents. During one, Skelton had hit her, smashing her sunglasses, and she sustained a black eye.
In addition, the woman recalled that Skelton had kneed her in the leg.
“She also described an incident at a McDonald’s drive-thru when he repeatedly hit on the leg, causing bruising,” said Mr Shelley.
When Skelton was initially interviewed by police, he made no comment.
In court, he admitted engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour which he knew — or ought to have known — would have a serious effect on the woman.
District judge Philip Holden, after hearing the prosecutor’s outline, concluded that the case was too serious to be concluded in the magistrates’ court due to the limited sentencing powers available.
Instead, Skelton will receive his punishment at Carlisle Crown Court.
A probation service background report will be prepared before the sentencing hearing, which is currently listed in front of a judge on 9th February.
In the meantime Skelton, of Sleastonhow Lane, Kirkby Thore, remains on bail.
Conditions prohibit him from contacting the woman in any way, and also attending a residential street in Carlisle.
