Popular Lake District Chinese restaurant to close after 25 years

Golden Hills in Keswick

A popular Keswick Chinese restaurant and take away run by the same couple for the past 25 years will serve its last customers at the end of the month.

Owners Andy and Laura Chow have decided to call it a day after running the Golden Hills on Main Street for a quarter of a century.

In a post on social media they thanked their loyal customers for being part of their journey over the years and there has been an outpouring of sadness since the announcement was made.

“We have just had enough after 25 years,” said Laura. “The lease is due and we have simply decided not to carry on.

“We have not got the staff to carry on as a restaurant and it is just not worth it doing takeaway only. The last few years have been a bit difficult since Covid.

“All our customers and regulars know and we do not want to make a fuss.”

The couple’s social media post read: “Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share with you all.

“It hasn’t been an easy decision to make and after much deliberation we have decided that we will not be renewing our lease and will be closing our doors permanently at the end of this month.

“We are sad to be leaving this journey behind us but as you all know the last few years have been challenging and this last year has just been the most difficult.”

It operated as a restaurant until November 2024, when it switched to a takeaway only due to circumstances beyond its control, it said at the time.
