Weather prospects look much better for the weekend to allow a full programme of Cumberland County League matches.
Only five games survived the weather last weekend, two in the Benevolent Cup and the other three in Division One.
Tomorrow should see eight of the Premier Division sides back in action, although the clash between Wigton Harriers and Cleator Moor Celtic reserves is a Conway Cup-tie.
Not playing are Unisun Athletic and Cockermouth, so there’s an opportunity for Maryport Athletic to extend their lead at the top over their Carlisle rivals.
But it won’t be easy as Whitehaven Miners Social are often a tough nut to crack and it could be an entertaining game at Milltoft.
The champions are only two points ahead of Unisun and have played two more games before tomorrow so can’t afford to drop any more points.
Keswick will be without some of their younger players who have games with Workington Reds Under-18s and Under-23s when they entertain Aspatria.
They have also suffered a blow with the departure of midfielder George Frampton, who has gone back to West Lancashire League side Whitehaven.
Frampton had returned to his home-town club after Whitehaven lost their manager and several other players.
But Brian Dawson, the new man in charge at the County Ground, has persuaded him to return and help a side currently bottom of the table.
As for Keswick they are 7th of 10 in the league, two places and three points better off than Aspatria but from two more games.
There’s also a good game in prospect at the Ranch where Workington Juniors have a home game against Mirehouse – fourth against third.
Interestingly among the games that survived the weather last week Mirehouse and Workington Juniors both made progress in the Cumberland County League’s Benevolent Cup.
In Division One there are four games scheduled and there’s an opportunity for Dearham United to close the gap on leaders Northbank.
At the moment the villagers sit four points behind their rivals but this is one of three games they have in hand as Northbank have no fixture. They travel to mid-table Unisun Development.
Cockermouth reserves and Windscale reserves, third and fourth in the table, are not out of the hunt and both play tomorrow.
Whitehaven Miners Development host Cockermouth reserves while Windscale reserves travel to Silloth.
The fourth game in Division One sees bottom side Carlisle City Development, still looking for their first win, at home to Whitehaven reserves.
