The Northern Lights have been visible over Cumbria.
Following a huge solar flare, which launched a coronal mass ejection from the Sun on Sunday January 18, the Met Office issued an extreme space weather alert – and people have been keeping their eyes peeled.
The Met Office said it was likely to bring aurora across Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and potentially further south, though visibility will depend on the timing of its arrival and cloud cover – and it did.
It was pretty clear over Workington – and the Northern Lights were almost visible to the naked eye.
The Met Office said by this evening, January 20, auroral activity is expected to decline, though it may still be visible in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and other similar latitudes with clear skies.
Auroras are then forecast to return to background levels for the remainder of the period.
Even police officers from Copeland have shared their image of the Northern Lights while they were out on foot patrol in Cleator Moor.
