Two Cumbrian beaches and the remains of the historic Workington Curwen estate have come to market.

Edwin Thompson has two Cumbrian beaches totalling over nearly 500 acres of foreshore as well as an unusual parcel of various side streets, parking areas and unregistered historic assets of the Curwen estate on offer.

The remains of the estate include various unregistered assets and all other residual property and interests, including unregistered minerals and manorial rights of the estate, for offers over £5,000.

Both beaches are being sold separately as land that previously formed part of the estate.

The first beach is a sweeping 295.18 acre stretch of coastline at Flimby, for offers over £60,000 and the second is a 125.67 acres of Cumbrian shoreline at Lowca, with wide-reaching coastal views, for offers over £150,000.

Two registered side streets and parking areas are also being sold as part of the remaining Curwen estate assets – including an area of side street and parking on Marsh Street, in Workington and a side street on Simpson Street, in Harrington.

Third parties will have rights of way over these areas.

The Curwen family were once among the most influential landowners in West Cumbria, and their estate holdings have historically been tightly retained.

The release of the land is a historical milestone and a chance for interested buyers to own unusual and heritage-rich land assets.

Matthew Bell, who is leading the sale, said the lots are very rare and mark unique opportunities that are best suited to investor buyers.

He added: “What we’re basically selling is the remains of the estate and with the back streets what is also is included is the unknown.

“So it’s the unknown mines and mineral ownership and also the unknown residual ownership, so it is a bit of an unknown what you’re buying.

“If somebody wanted to go through the historical records – you could be buying anything really.

“Then you’ve got the two foreshores and they’re unique as they don’t come up that often at all.”

While it might sound like a chance to snag a patch of land for a seaside home – both coastlines are not suitable to build on as they are between the low tide mark.

Instead, they’re a chance for investor buyers or people looking to become a steward of the land.

Both beaches also cannot be fenced off as they are public access areas. The boundary of both foreshores also stops at Cumbrian coast railway line.

Matthew added: “The family have taken the decision to sell what remains of the estate. As hundreds of years have gone on they’ve disposed of various assets and this is what is left.

“It is very rare for this kind of thing to come up.”
