The Brough to Middleton-in-Teesdale road has been mostly cleared but drivers are warned to take care.

Westmorland & Furness Council said the B6276 was blocked earlier today following heavy snowfall.

it said most of it had now been cleared but added: “This is a narrow B road and is still only passable with extreme care and is not suitable as a diversion route – especially for larger vehicles or HGVs – in the current conditions while the A66 is closed.”

Drivers are also advised to avoid the A686 Hartside to Alston.

The council said two gritters were working but conditions were challenging.

The authority said its crews were out to clear it and other routes around Alston.

It added: “Our highways teams have been out treating key routes and dealing with some reports of fallen trees and additional resources are in place to respond quickly to any issues arising from the storm.

“Teams will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day and will be out on the ground dealing with incidents as they occur.”
