A Kendal man and adventurer, who founded a charity to help people with their mental health, has hosted the Princess of Wales on a wellbeing walk.
Alex Staniforth, who set up Mind Over Mountains, hosted the princess on the walk in the Peak District.
The Princess of Wales was undeterred wind and rain as she walked and chatted with past participants of walks and retreats with Mind Over Mountains, who shared personal stories of how their experiences with the charity have helped them overcome mental health challenges.
Alex, 30, shared with her details of the charity’s unique approach to mental health care – outside in nature, walking side by side with qualified coaches and counsellors.
Alex said: “Sharing my own mental health journey with the Princess of Wales, while walking alongside people who’ve taken part in Mind Over Mountains walks and retreats, was incredibly meaningful.
“Her presence sent a powerful message – that mental health matters, that it’s OK to talk, and that support in nature can be a positive step forward.

“Seeing her take the time to listen, connect and walk with people so openly reinforced why this work is so important, and why creating safe, supportive spaces outdoors can make such a real difference to people’s lives.”
The day included short, guided mindfulness moments woven into the walk, helping the group to slow down, settle their thoughts, and connect with the landscape around them. Using the surrounding nature, hills and views, participants were gently supported by the Mind Over Mountains wellbeing coach, to reflect, gain perspective, and think about positive steps ahead.
Mind Over Mountains is the only UK charity that integrates professional therapeutic support with guided outdoor experiences and has supported over 1,000 people since it was set up in 2020, with a particular focus on supporting emergency service workers.
