A walker has been airlifted to hospital after they were found with multiple injuries on a Lake District fell.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue team were called out on Thursday 29 January at 1.58pm after Cumbria Police received a report from two people who had found a walker with multiple injuries, including head and arm trauma, near to Beck Head on Great Gable.
The team made a full callout and a Rescue 936 Coastguard helicopter from Caernarforn also attended, but after several attempts, the rescue helicopter was unable to complete a winch directly onto the scene, due to the weather conditions.
Once the Wasdale rescue team arrived at the scene, the walker’s multiple injuries were assessed and treated. The team said the man appeared to have experienced a very serious fall.
The man was then wrapped in heat blankets and a special vapour barrier to help minimise any further heat loss, as well as a vacuum mattress, to provide a full body splint to avoid unnecessary movement and a casualty bag, which provided more insulation.
Rescuers then completed a strenuous uphill transfer using the wheel up to Beck Head, to make sure the man was quickly transferred to the rescue helicopter waiting nearby.
After a handover, the walker was flown for further urgent assessment and treatment in a specialist hospital.
A spokesperson for Wasdale Mountain Rescue said: “Many thanks to the crew of Rescue 936 for their help once again. Thanks also to the two walkers who stayed and looked after the walker with clothing and a shelter until the team arrived.
“Also thanks to the The Wasdale Head Inn for taking care of his dog. We hope the walker recovers quickly from his injuries.”
The rescue lasted five hours and 39 minutes.
