A Cumbrian MP has issued a statement following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister this morning.
Julie Minns, who represents Carlisle, said: “History will remember Keir Starmer as the leader who took Labour from the hard left wilderness and back into government in a single term, something no other Labour leader has achieved.
“I will always be grateful for the leadership he showed in rebuilding our party and giving me the opportunity to become Carlisle’s MP.
“Being elected nearly two years ago remains the greatest honour of my life.
“As we enter a new chapter, my focus remains firmly on delivering for Carlisle, particularly on SEND, flood defences and securing investment for our city. The Labour Party must now come together and continue delivering for the people we were elected to serve.”
The Prime Minister has been under pressure to resign as leader of the Labour Party for several months.
Sir Keir’s resignation comes after Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election last Thursday.
Sir Keir said he accepted the verdict of Labour MPs that he was no longer the right person to fight the next General Election.
He said: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”
He said a new prime minister would be in place by September.
