Whitehaven have had a week off following last week’s heavy defeat in the Championship against Newcastle Thunder.
They don’t have a game this week end after being knocked-out of the Challenge Cup by Sheffield in the previous round.
Coach Anthony Murray was very disappointed with the 54-6 defeat against a Newcastle side, now full-time, much changed from last season and boosted by imports on loan from York Knights.
Anthony gives his thoughts below on the game after reflection and has now his sights set on an improved display in the next Championship game at home to current table leaders Barrow:
It was a hard watch for Whitehaven fans but there was an uplifting moment during the afternoon when a number of the club’s ex-players were presented with their heritage numbers.
They were Harry Maddison (101 games, 4 tries); Mike Gracey (147, 21); the late Barry Smith, collected by wife Mary (123, 10, 1 goal, 1 drop goal); John Pringle, collected by son Jarrod (281, 35, 1 goal); John McFarlane (137, 13, 3 goals, 25 drop goals) before coaching Whitehaven in 1987/88; Brian Rose (243, 33); Alan Sewell (83, 23) and the late Keith Hunter, collected by Reg Gallagher ( 141, 65 points) and George Mather (129, 31, 237 goals, 16 drop goals).
Whitehaven Hall of Famer Phil Kitchin made the presentations on the field.
