Gavin Cowan had his first win as Shrewsbury manager but Barrow boss Paul Gallagher is still searching for his with the Bluebirds.
In a crucial relegation battle at Shrewsbury the home side won 2-1 leaving Barrow with only the drop-zone places below them and just a three-point cushion over both Newport and Harrogate.
It was Barrow’s sixth successive defeat and the win meant that Shrewsbury leapfrogged them in the table.
Cowan, who replaced Michael Appleton recently, had left Brackley to take the Shrewsbury hot seat and this was his third game in charge. It was the first time the Shrews had hosted Barrow in the League for 57 years.
Barrow’s recent signing Danny Rose was close to opening the scoring in the first-half but saw his effort strike the bar. Charlie McCann was also out of luck when a good shot was well-saved by Matthew Cox.
Bluebirds boss Gallagher made two substitutions at half time with Ben Whitfield replacing Brandon Powell and Tom Barkhuizen coming on for Jovan Malcolm.
But it was Shrewsbury who grabbed the lead two minutes into the second-half after Barrow conceded a free-kick and Anthony Scully was a late arrival at the far post to score his fifth of the season.
The lead was doubled on 54 minutes when Luca Hoole netted and although substitute Tyler Walker pulled one back for Barrow, the visitors could not salvage anything in the time left.
