Unisun Athletic have the chance to go top of the Cumberland County League’s Premier Division tomorrow.
Currently second in the table they have two games in hand of leaders Maryport Athletic and are just a point behind.
Maryport are involved in a Benevolent Cup quarter final at home to bottom side Cleator Moor Celtic reserves so this is one of the two catch-up fixtures for Unisun.
It’s not a gimmee either as they host Cockermouth, who will be their opponents later in the season in the Conway Cup final.
Cockermouth are not in the title race but have been putting together some decent performances, especially last week when they beat an in-form Workington Juniors 5-1.
The Juniors are still theoretically in the hunt, two points behind leaders Maryport Athletic, but they have played more games than the leading group.
Two Whitehaven sides, Miners Social and Mirehouse will also consider themselves as contenders and will be favourites to add to their respective points tallies tomorrow.
The Miners travel to Aspatria while Mirehouse entertain Wigton Harriers to complete the Premier Division line-up.
In the other Benevolent Cup quarter final tomorrow Keswick entertain Division One side Silloth.
Keswick’s disappointing Cumberland League season lurched to a new low last week when they were beaten 8-0 at home by Whitehaven Miners Social.
It continued a run of successive home defeats as the club continues to suffer from players’ absences which Minetrs Social took full advantage of.
Keswick ended 2025 with a fine 2-2 draw at champions Maryport Athletic but have lost three straight games at home since then by ever-increasing margins.
Matt Rankin is back in centre-midfield, after he has had work commitments and a new baby to keep him out, and that will be a boost to the side who haven’t played Silloth since they were in Division One together,
Keswick will have noted that tomorrow’s opponents lost 4-1 to Whitehaven reserves last Saturday.
The race for the Division One title seems to have developed into a three-horse race with Dearham out in front on 31 points from their 13 games. Northbank are second with 28 points from the same number of games while Cockermouth reserves are still in it on 22 points but with two games in hand.
All three will expect to win tomorrow as Dearham and Northbank both face Development sides while Cockermouth host Whitehaven reserves.
The four scheduled fixtures are: Carlisle City Development v Windscale reserves; Cockermouth reserves v Whitehaven reserves; Northbank v Unisun Development; Whitehaven Miners Development v Dearham Utd.
