Many people are experiencing emotional distress and financial uncertainty when they first meet with a solicitor to discuss separation or divorce.

Some may also be vulnerable, whether due to conflict, financial control within the relationship, or the stress of relationship breakdown.

My role is to provide clear, practical legal advice while offering reassurance and support throughout the process.

One of the most common questions I get asked is how finances will be divided.

People are often concerned about the family home, savings, pensions, businesses and investment properties.

In complex cases, clients frequently worry that their former partner may be hiding assets or controlling financial information.

Questions about financial disclosure are common, including what documents must be provided and what options are available if the other party does not co-operate.

Timescales and legal costs are also a key concern. People often want to know how long financial proceedings may take, whether court involvement is necessary, and what alternatives exist to resolve matters through negotiation or settlement discussions.

Many are keen to avoid unnecessary conflict while still securing a fair financial outcome.

For cohabiting clients, there is often confusion around legal rights. Many assume they have the same protections as married couples, which is not the case.

They want to know whether they can claim an interest in property, how financial contributions are assessed, and what evidence may be required to support a claim.

My day-to-day role involves advising on financial positions, preparing court documents, reviewing financial disclosure, and progressing matters through the financial remedy process.

Where appropriate, I work closely with experts such as property valuers and forensic accountants to clarify complex financial arrangements. I also engage in negotiations with the other party’s solicitors to reach fair and practical settlements.

Ultimately, my focus is on supporting clients by providing clarity, reassurance and strong legal representation to help them move forward with confidence.
