Families whose babies need specialist care at Barrow’s Furness General Hospital will benefit from a donation to its Special Care Baby Unit from a dad and a local business.
Kaylam Nicholson, whose son Max was cared for on the unit, visited the hospital to donate a lamp and artwork funded by A Holdens Ltd of Barrow, where Kaylam is a director.
The lamp and artwork will help transform the SCBU family bedroom into a more welcoming and comforting space.
The items were bought personally by Kaylam with money from Holdens as a gesture of support for other families spending time on the unit.
Helen Wallace, matron for neonatal services at the hospital, said: “On behalf of the team I would like to thank Kaylam and Holdens for this incredibly kind donation of items for our Special Care Unit family bedroom.
“This thoughtful gesture has helped us towards creating a more comforting and welcoming space for families to stay and be with their babies during a challenging time.”
The SCBU team supports some of the hospital’s smallest and most vulnerable patients, as well as their parents and carers.
Having a dedicated family bedroom that feels warm, calm and homely makes a difference to those who may be facing anxious or emotional moments with their newborn babies.
Kaylam said: “I couldn’t thank the staff at SCBU more. Having a child is already a scary experience without the added circumstance of them needing additional care.
“Not once did I feel like a burden or unaware of what was happening. The staff there are a godsend.
“Max is on the autism spectrum, but he is doing fantastic and is healthy and well.
“He was born in Barrow, weighing just 3lbs and was 12 weeks premature. He’ll be turning seven in June, which seems unbelievable.”
