Hospice at Home West Cumbria is supporting a campaign to raise awareness of the vital role hospices play in communities and the importance of future support through gifts in wills.
The This is Hospice Care campaign – now in its second year and led by Hospice UK – aims to challenge misconceptions about hospice care and highlight the compassionate, specialist support provided to people at the end of life and their families — not just in hospice buildings, but in people’s own homes and communities.
As a charity, Hospice at Home West Cumbria relies heavily on the generosity of supporters to continue providing free, high quality end of life care across West Cumbria.
One in four people are cared for thanks to gifts in wills.
Leaving a gift in a will is a powerful way to support future generations, helping ensure that patients and families across West Cumbria can continue to receive dignified, compassionate care when they need it most.
Julie Monk, CEO of Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said: “Hospice care is about so much more than end of life — it’s about living well until the end, being supported, and never feeling alone.
“Gifts in wills help secure the future of our services, allowing us to be there for patients and families today and for many years to come.
“By supporting the This is Hospice Care campaign, we hope to start important conversations and encourage people to consider the lasting impact they can make.”
Marion and James, supporters from Workington, said: “We chose to leave a gift to Hospice at Home West Cumbria because it is a charity which is run locally and brings essential services to people across West Cumbria.
“Anyone can leave a gift in their will; it’s not only for people with large estates or property.
“We feel a sense of comfort and pride knowing that our legacy will help to support people facing the toughest of times.”
Hospice at Home West Cumbria encourages supporters to learn more about the campaign and consider leaving a gift in their will, no matter how large or small.
Every gift helps ensure that hospice care remains available for everyone who needs it, now and in the future.
What does Hospice at Home West Cumbria do?
Hospice at Home West Cumbria provides palliative and end of life care to patients and their families across West Cumbria.
It needs to raise over £1.5 million each year to deliver these vital services which are provided for free to those who need them.
Its nurses deliver palliative and end of life care in the patient’s home 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing the best possible care for people with a life limiting illness and those who are close to them.
It is the sole provider of specialist lymphoedema services in West Cumbria. It provides assessments, appropriate treatments and support and advice for patients, families and carers.
Its family and bereavement support team supports patients and their families during some of the most difficult of times. They offer a number of therapies, including one-to-one and group support to patients, carers and those bereaved.
Its complementary therapists offer mindfulness, reflexology, Reiki, therapeutic massage, and breathing and relaxation techniques. Treatments are offered to patients with life limiting conditions and their loved ones. Many patients find Reiki to be especially beneficial in the last days of life, offering a sense of peace and calm, the hospice said.
