A £2 million project to upgrade water mains in a Lake District village have been revealed.
United Utilities is investing the cash in the network at Glenridding.
The project is being carried out to improve the resilience and reliability of the water network in the area by protecting against leaks and bursts, the firm said.
In total, 5.3km of new mains will be introduced. The work has been divided into phases to avoid impact on the tourist season.
The first phase will begin on March 3 and be completed by Easter.
It will see mains upgraded along a section of the A592 and in residential areas including Greenside Road.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A592 while work is carried out on the stretch from the Inn on the Lake to the Ullswater Inn.
Access to all homes and businesses will be maintained.
Paul Forshaw, United Utilities’ county business lead for water in Cumbria said: “These new mains are designed to withstand high pressure and temperature variations and are designed to last more than 100 years. They will help reduce the risks of leaks and bursts in the future.
“We have worked closely with the local community to plan our works to co-ordinate with other activities taking place in Glenridding and we have broken it up into phases to avoid the tourist season.”
Contract partners M Group will carry out the work.
