Whitehaven’s fate was virtually sealed yesterday when they went down 7-0 at Lostock St Gerard’s in the West Lancashire League’s Premier Division.
Marooned at the foot of the table it has looked inevitable that the County Ground side would end up being relegated to Division One – and new manager Brian Dawson is already planning for next season.
However, he is looking for his depleted squad to regain some pride over the last nine league games while they also have a cup quarter final to look forward to,
They will travel to CMB in the last eight of the President’s Cup, a trophy that was won be neighbours Cleator Moor Celtic last season.
Lostock St Gerard’s, not for the first time this season, were named as the best side a Cumbrian side had come up against – although they are eight points behind long-time leaders Eagley.
Hnder-strength Whitehaven were 5-0 down by half-time as Lostock roared ahead through Reece Thomson (8), Isaac Loftus (14, 41), Jack Shields (22) and Craig Ronald (35).
To their credit Whitehaven dug deep second half and conceded only two more goals to Charlie Markland (53) and Josh Sarda (70, pen)
Milnthope Corinthians are also still standing in the President’s Cup after a narrow 2-1 win at Ulverston Rangers.
Two goals from Jonny Voortman (22, 66) won it for the Corinthians with Diesel Wilkes netting for the First Division side on the hour.
Corinthians can look forward to a home tie against Pause United, also in Division One, in their quarter final.
Millom’s involvement in the Richardson Cup ended with a 3-0 home defeat to Haslingden St Mary’s.
Charlie Ridge was the match-winner with a hat-trick, scoring his goals in the 4th, 12th and 51st minutes.
