A Lake District pier has reopened after a revamp.
Pooley Bridge Pier will reopen to passengers today, Monday March 2, following a programme of essential improvement and upgrade work, carried out by Ullswater ‘Steamers’.
The work is part of a long-term plan to strengthen and upgrade facilities around Ullswater and will allow Ullswater ‘Steamers’ to look at future opportunities to diversify its timetable.
Improvements to the pier include structural strengthening of the pier itself and new anti-slip decking and utilities.
It is hoped the upgrades will make services more resilient by reducing weather-related disruption, increasing capacity for private charters and improving the overall experience for passengers.
It will also support better links with sustainable transport options and make it easier for visitors to explore the Ullswater Valley without relying on a car.
Callum Smith, general manager at Ullswater ‘Steamers’, said: “It’s fantastic to welcome passengers back to Pooley Bridge. It’s always a special place to sail from, helping visitors discover the lake, enjoy beautiful walks and support local businesses along the way.
“The new measures we’ve put in place are all about enhancing our passengers’ comfort and safety. For instance, we’ve replaced all the decking with modern anti-slip boards and strengthened the main structure.
“These improvements mean the pier is ready to serve our visitors and wider community for many years to come.”
The pier works were supported in part by funding from Westmorland and Furness Council through the Rural England Prosperity Fund Business Grants and Support Scheme.
The work was carefully scheduled during a traditionally quieter time of year to minimise disruption and Ullswater ‘Steamers’ continued to operate services from other piers around the lake throughout the four month project.
