A community-led scheme is aiming to help make Kendal bloom.
Kendal Town Council is working on the scheme to enhance the Kirkland triangle area and the aim is to highlight the stretch from Kirkland into Abbot Hall Park and along Colonel’s Walk.
The scheme is part of plans for the town to re-enter Cumbria in Bloom and involves planting initiatives.
Residents, community groups and businesses in the area are also invited to progress their own projects to help give the area a boost.
An early success of the project has been the revitalisation of the Dowker’s Lane planting bed beside the Cable & Blake store.
Supported by the Kendal in Bloom Committee, the site has undergone improvement work, including the removal of failing fir trees, cutting back overgrown shrubs, and clearing accumulated weeds and undergrowth.
A community call-out brought forward a dedicated team of volunteers who installed new plants and spread mulch to help suppress future weeds.
They also placed additional plants in the nearby Peace Garden in Abbot Hall.
Councillor Andy Blackman, chair of the Kendal in Bloom Committee said: ‘After weeks of grey weather, sunshine made a welcome appearance on the planting day, adding to the sense of optimism and shared achievement.
“Kendal in Bloom is a community initiative, and we are pleased to be part of the efforts that will bring colour and year-round interest to this well-used corner of town.’
Cadent Gas donated £500 towards new plants as a goodwill gesture following the completion of gas pipe replacement work nearby.
Westmorland & Furness Council will continue to maintain the enhanced planting bed as part of their ongoing responsibilities.
Kendal Town Council always welcomes new volunteers to join future community planting and improvement projects.
