Whitehaven had a last chance of salvaging something from their season in the West Lancashire League’s President’s Cup.
It was a trophy Cleator Moor Celtic had won last season so there was every incentive to keep the silverware in West Cumbria.
But it was a tough task at CMB. Last season’s Premier Division runners-up and although they battled well after a slow, hesitant start they went down 4-0.
Once again manager Brian Dawson had to travel without several of his more experienced players and they gave away a poor goal after 17 minutes when Charlie Scholes put the hosts in front.
The visitors settled after that setback and got through to half time without any further setback.
Intent on staying in the game they competed well and played some decent enough football until CMB scored a second goal from Scholes midway through the half.
The experienced home side went on to punish Whitehaven further with two more goals from Alex Cassidy and Callum Walsh in the last five minutes.
You can hear what manager Brian Dawson thought of the game by listening below:
Cleator Moor Celtic lost 4-1 at Hurst Green in the Premier Division but it was a result that flattered the hosts.
Celtic, had in fact dominated the first half but conceded two goals, and couldn’t convert the chances they created.
It was a similar story in the second half with Celtic again producing some good football, creating chances but they conceded two more goals before Jamie Martin pulled one back on 80 minutes.
Manager Gareth Agnrew had to make late changes to his squad because of injuries, illness and work commitments and drafted in members of his Under-18s squad.
One in particular Carson Williams was outstanding on his debut at right back and Agnew felt there were lots of positives to take from the game.
You can hear what he thought of the game below:
Millom renewed acquaintances with Astley and Buckshaw United, the team who accompanied them into the Premier Division this season, and came out on top 2-1.
All three goals came in a five-minute spell midway through the second half.
Samir Sebei put the home side ahead on 65 minutes but Millom hit back swiftly to win the game with strikes from Harry Crowley (67) and top scorer Ben Macdonald (69).
It puts Millom up to seventh in the table, a commendable effort in their first season in the top flight.
