Barrow goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom started a short-term loan with Rochdale last night and played at Scunthorpe.
Dale drew 2-2 after being 2-0 ahead but now lead the National League table by three points from nearest rivals York City who were beaten 3-1 at Gateshead on Tuesday.
Winterbottom is linking up with Dale for just the two games while Oliver Whatmuff is absent on international duty.
The Preston-born 24-year-old began his youth development with Blackburn Rovers from under-ten level and signed a two-year scholarship deal in 2017.
In the final months of his deal, he was picked up by Liverpool’s academy and made two appearances in the EFL Trophy for the Under-21 side.
He was also named on the bench in the Reds’ Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa in late 2019 before signing his first professional deal the following July.
In January 2021, Winterbottom signed for Brentford’s B team for an undisclosed fee. He was part of their London Senior Cup win and enjoyed a spell on loan at National League South side Welling United in 2023.
After being promoted to the first team, Winterbottom headed out on loan to the National League with AFC Fylde, where he impressed making 41 appearances. He made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the division, despite the Coasters’ relegation.
Following the expiry of his Brentford contract, he joined League Two’s Barrow on a two-year contract last summer, going on to make seven outings this campaign including an away win at Tranmere Rovers in December. He has mainly been used as number two to Wyll Stanway.
